What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common hand condition that is caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. Compression in this narrow space can lead to numbness, tingling and even weakness in the hand.

Why might I need surgery?

If other management options are ineffective, surgery may be indicated to relieve the symptoms.

What does Carpal Tunnel surgery involve?

You will come to hospital to undergo the procedure. An incision is made over the wrist to access a fibrous connective tissue band called the flexor retinaculum. This forms the roof of the carpal tunnel and a release of this increases the space available within the carpal tunnel.

What will the recovery be like after surgery?

  • Light activities can be starting straight away as long as they don’t cause discomfort. Gradually increase the activity after the first week but avoid causing discomfort.

  • For the first month you should avoid repeitive tasks, power gripping, vibrating tools and heavy lifting.

  • Swelling can be minimised by keeping your hand above the level of your heart when possible.

  • Hand and wrist exercises after surgery (add something here)

  • Hand therapy team referral will be made

Wound healing is a unique process that depends on the incision type, age, and any underlying health conditions. The sutures (stitches) placed provide support but it is your body that does the main healing work. You can support this by:

  • Eating a nutritious and balanced diet

  • Avoiding smoking

  • Optimising blood sugar levels if diabetic

Remove the bulky part of the dressing after 24 hours and leave the smaller dressing beneath on for 5 days.

If the wound gets wet, dry it and replace the dressing. After five days, you may wash and shower as normal, patting the wound dry afterward. Avoid swimming until the wound has completely healed.

What are the risks of carpal tunnel surgery?

Risks include infection, bleeding and pain. There is a small risk of nerve damage that can lead problems with hand function. If your symptoms are longstanding and chronic they may not completely resolve after surgery. Dr Scott will discuss potential risks in detail during the consent process.
